Then I came across the nickel-plated lamp balls. They are also 3/8" in dimension, but don't scratch like the soft brass balls.

I decided that I would make the plates out of brass because it is readily available in strips, and is easy to work. The brass plates and nickel-plated balls seem to be a great combination.
